Dr. Oz says you can maximize your weight loss by making some changes in the time you do certain things. He says you should weigh yourself first thing in the morning. You are the lightest you will be when you first wake up and make sure you take a pee first. You can weigh up to 2 pounds less than any other time of day, so it is the most satisfying time to weigh in.

Second, Dr. Oz suggests you work out in the morning, before you eat breakfast because then you are burning fat instead of what you just ate for breakfast, lunch or dinner. That makes so much sense! Some trainers tell you that you need to have a little energy to help you work out, but if you do, make it something tiny, just to tide you over. You can get used to eating later once you get into the routine. It’s not that hard. And you should not be drinking energy drinks, they are just sugar, which means you have to burn more calories.

Small snacks – about 15 minutes before a meal, you should have an apple or other small high-fiber fruit. When you have this, you will have a tendency to eat fewer calories during that meal.

Also suggested are specific times to eat meals, 7:30 AM, noon and 6:30 PM. These are the times our bodies are naturally the most hungry.

Our naturally occurring levels of melatonin, the hormone that makes us feel sleepy are the highest at 10 PM, which means we should be falling asleep then to maximize our ability to fall asleep. In general, if you miss that time, you start craving the carbs!

He said a lot more, you can see the video here: http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/HealthyLiving/video/lose-weight-around-the-clock-13155977

This is the worst idea I have ever heard of in dieting. HCG is a pregnancy/fertility hormone, and not a dieting aid. Our bodies and our hormones are designed so specifically and completely for certain functions, and dieting is not a function of HCG. Yet some highly unethical doctors are prescribing it for women. Besides being very expensive, where is the proof that it even works. On top of that, the women using these hormone injections are only taking in 500 calories per day. Wow, that sounds like almost total starvation to me. Have you ever tried limiting your calorie intake to 500 calories in one day. How could you fall asleep, you would be so hungry you wouldn’t be able to sleep. I have trouble holding calories down to 2000!

I am not a doctor, but some things you just know are wrong, and this is one of those things!

Haven’t we been hearing how drinking more water helps with weight loss? Scientists have now done official studies on this, and it is TRUE! Nothing is simpler to do that drink water. The study involved having people drinking 2 glasses of water before they sat down to eat. This makes your stomach feel more full, and eat a little less, 75-90 calories worth of food.

This doesn’t work with diet drinks, which trick your mind into wanting to consume more sweets!

See this segment on The Today Show: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/38829351#38829351

This morning the Today Show did a segment on the latest in celebrity eating habits, because inquiring minds want to know that Gwyneth Paltrow and Anne Hathaway have gone gluten free. Celebrity endorsements extend beyond Boniva ads by Sally Fields! Has a male celebrity ever endorsed Viagra? I doubt it, but enough celebrity nonsense.

I recently went gluten free after my daughter was diagnosed with Celiac. By the way, the medical doctor, Roshini Raj, interviewed on this segment says that Celiac is a “true allergy”, which is not true, and she must know this. It is an autoimmune disease, with much harsher implications on health and well being. Anyway, I was sure I didn’t have celiac, but I stopped eating gluten because I wanted to see how hard it is to do and let me tell you, it’s HARD to do. I noticed as time went by that the arthritis I had had for decades was lessening, and my very itchy skin stopped being so dry and itchy. I now can’t be tested unless I went back on wheat products, but I don’t want to, so I will just take it on faith that I have a problem with gluten.

Roshini Raj, the medical advisor for Health Magazine, (see her bio on this page, halfway down) seemed to poo-poo eliminating gluten as a stupid fad and not a way to lose weight. But let me tell you, I can no longer mindlessly eat the bread served to me at restaurants, or the chocolate chip cookies served at parties, and hundreds of other foods. So it does keep me on the straight and narrow to some extent!

Most flour in foods in the United States, is bleached, and no one has ever studied the effects of bleached flour on our bodies. I think it probably has some bad effects, evidenced by this trend to eliminate it. Maybe you should try it!

See the video segment here: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/38656063#38656063

I have figured out that when I am tempted to eat any kind of junk food, if I get started at all, I CANNOT stop. I think, well, I will just have a few, and a few turns into a lot, or what is left of the candy or chips or even pretzels.

So how do I handle this? I have decided that I should work harder not to eat the first one. This works sometimes, but of course, not always. My husband likes to bring me chocolate, which I adore, because he equates sweets with love. I have asked him not to do this! But he does it anyway. SO I just ate about 6 malted milk balls. Ugh. They are delicious of course. Tomorrow, I am not going to eat any. I hope.

I found this great website, which lets you to find the amount of calories in a huge variety of foods, and allows you to create a free account and keep track of your weight, what activity you did during the day and the foods you have eaten. You also enter a diet start and end date and it tells you how many calories you can eat in a day as well as an overview of the fat, carbs and protein you have eaten and a graph of your weight.

My first problem with this site is that I think it is overstating the number of calories I need to lose the amount of weight I want to lose in the next six weeks. Other sites I have used to enter my weight, height, sex and daily activity level have suggested the amount of calories I need each day are less, like 500 calories less.

My second problem is that I had a hard time finding the amount of calories they suggest I burn in an average day, how much I should be eating to lose weight and how many calories I have left in a given day. Their “calorie balance equation”, which tells you the calories you burn minus the calorie restriction to lose the amount of weight in your desired amount of time, is here: go to the “Weight Goal” tab. At the bottom of the page are a set of 6 tabs. Go to the tab that says “Calorie Balance”.

You have a much better chance of doing some moderate activity if you get off the couch.

You are not subject to the very bad ads for junk food that get into your head and make you crave junk food.

You can’t be watching TV and snacking if you are not watching TV.

People who watch 2 or more hours of TV per day eat 7% more calories, which is certainly enough for a steady weight gain.

If you are going to be sedentary, dive into a great book instead, it is good for your brain.

I read a good article on Yahoo. It suggests that you need to weigh yourself EVERY DAY. Personally, I hate doing this, especially because it is cold in my house at this time of year, it is winter after all, and I always weigh myself naked. I would hate for my weight to fluctuate because I have on different clothes in the morning. I have to weigh myself in the morning because I always feel the thinnest when I wake up. I wonder if I actually weigh less?

This article says weighing yourself every day is a key to long term weight loss, which means I am going to have to do this in spite of freezing to death while doing it. Maybe I could indulge in setting the thermostat higher, but I like to be cold when I sleep.

We have two kinds of finer to choose from. Fruits tend to have fiber that absorbs water on the way through your body and so helps with softening stools. Nothing like constipation to wreck your day!

The other kind of fiber just adds bulk, and is present mostly in whole grain foods.
