A study was done on 299 adults for 13 years, and found that walking 6 – 9 miles per week may stop your brain from shrinking as you age. Exercise increases the blood to the brain, so more of the important nutrients get to the brain. And the more you walk, the more it helps, expect more than 9 miles per week only improves your fitness level, which is also important!

Scientists are finding out that yoga has health benefits, including making changes to your brain so you eat less. A study was done 3 years ago that followed the weight of a group of middle aged people. Those who did yoga regularly did not gain weight, while those who did NOT gained an average of over 13 pounds in a 10 year period.

Yoga as so many other healthy benefits as well, we should all be doing it! I am going to go find a class right now!

There is a movement afoot in Massachusetts. In most communities, if children live too close to school to qualify to be picked up by the school bus, they have to walk, which REALLY means the parents drive them. So how about parents WALKING their kids to school? You get some exercise in your day, your kids get exercise, and everyone burns more calories during the day.

Aerobic exercise, exercise during which you are not working hard enough so you can’t carry on a conversation, causes you to burn calories at a higher level for several hours after you finish.

It’s a win-win situation. The Boston Globe has an article about it:

http://www.boston.com/news/local/articles/2008/09/19/walk_to_school_movement_afoot_across_mass/

Did you know that muscle burns more calories all day long than other kinds of body tissue? Yup! Older people who are trying to lose weight complain that if they ate 3 carrot sticks per day, they still would not lose any weight. Well, okay, that is an exaggeration, but as we age, we are less active, which causes us to lost muscle mass and then we don’t need as much to eat.

So go to Target, or Sports Authority, or another store that sells free weights, or weights you can strap on your ankles or wrists, and get busy building muscles! Besides burning more calories at rest, you will fell better and be able to do more lifting around the house, even bringing heavy grocery bags home.

Having stronger muscles provides a lot of health benefits. From her website, “Dr. Miriam Nelson is Director of the Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition and Associate Professor of Nutrition at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. She is also a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, an honor reserved for those who have demonstrated superior leadership and research in the field of exercise.” I know Miriam Nelson personally, her website that lists the books she has written, specifically about women who stay strong and therefore healthy. She has researched this topic for many years. http://www.strongwomen.com/
It only takes a few minutes a day. You can do it in front of the TV. Some cable channels have exercise shows that show you how to lift weights properly. You could tape the show to work out while watching it when you have time.

But did you know that after you finish an aerobic workout, you burn calories at a higher level for a few hours? So the benefits last a lot longer than you realize. You say you don’t have time? MAKE TIME! Start with a 10 minute walk. You can’t afford not to make the time.
