Misleading Calorie Content in Restaurants
My husband and I went to Uno Chicago Grill in Boston because we were going to a play at the theater next to the restaurant afterward. I have started asking waitresses everywhere I go for food whether the calorie content of the food on their menu is available. I think it should always be available, I hate not knowing if I am having 200 calories in a meal or 2000.
The answer at Uno’s is a surprising yes! But they don’t make it easy. You have to get up and go to a computer screen near the entrance and choose the category, like appetizers or salads, etc. I was considering having the avocado egg rolls, and much to my surprise, they were only 240 calories, WOW! As I started to leave, I noticed that the screen said that appetizers are sized to share, and then on the nutrition content area, it said this dish has two servings. So actually, the avocado egg rolls have 480 calories.
Then I decided to check out other dishes, and most of them are sized for more than one person! I consider this really deceptive on Uno’s part. The Rattlesnake Pasta has 640 calories, and there are two servings being served, for a whopping real total of 1,280 calories. This is more than half of the calories I should be eating in the whole day.
So be aware of what is going on here. They know you don’t want food with tons of calories, so they have found a way to lie about it, right in front of your face. I do this when I eat out – I divide the food on my plate in half, and eat half and take the rest home for yummy leftovers! It’s a win-win situation. You don’t overeat and you get great leftovers.
